Exploring AI and Measurement in Education: IOE Researchers Present at ICAIE in China

ICAIE 2026 focused on one of the most pressing questions in contemporary education: how artificial intelligence is changing learning, assessment, feedback and the design of educational environments. This year’s theme “Syntegrative Education Empowered by AI: Personalization and Gamification in a New Era of Learning and Interdisciplinary Integration” brought together discussions on AI-enabled personalised education, gamified and interdisciplinary learning, educational technology, intelligent assessment, AI literacy, learning analytics and new models of human–AI interaction in education. The conference positioned itself as a platform for researchers from academia, industry and government institutions to exchange and present new research on artificial intelligence and education.
The programme was especially relevant to the Centre’s research agenda. ICAIE tracks addressed, among other topics, AI algorithms for personalised learning paths, ethical issues in AI-driven personalisation, teacher roles in AI-enhanced classrooms, data privacy, intelligent assessment, classroom evaluation supported by AI, AI literacy of teachers and students, and intelligent learning environments.”, says Ksenia Tarasova.
The conference also included a dedicated track on Syntegrative Education in the Age of Artificial Intelligence, focused on physical–virtual integration, interdisciplinary learning, intelligent tutoring systems, adaptive pathways and institutional strategies for AI-supported education.
Ksenia Tarasova, a Director of the Centre for Psychometrics and Measurement in Education, was invited to speak at the conference and chaired a session on AI-Enabled Personalized Education: Innovations and Challenges. Her invited talk, “Task-Specific GenAI Use and the Decoupling of Core AI Literacy Components Across Disciplines,” addressed how generative AI is used in different academic contexts and why AI literacy should be studied not only as a general competence, but also in relation to specific tasks and disciplinary practices.
Nataliia Murashova, a first-year PhD student at the IOE Doctoral School presented the paper “Do Human Experts and Large Language Models Agree? Evaluating Extended Open-Ended Student Responses,” co-authored with Ksenia Tarasova. The study focuses on a key challenge for the future of educational assessment: whether large language models can align with human expert judgement when evaluating extended student responses. The paper also received two awards in the student works category–Best Presentation Award and Best Research Paper Award–winning in two out of three nominations.
Daria Gracheva, a Research Fellow at the Centre for Psychometrics and Measurement in Education, presented the study “AI-Generated Diagnostic Feedback from Test Results: A Psychometrically Grounded Framework,” co-authored with Alina Ivanova, a Deputy Director of the Centre. The presentation proposed a framework for generating diagnostic feedback from test results while preserving a strong psychometric foundation. The topic directly connects to the Centre’s work on valid, interpretable and actionable assessment in AI-supported educational systems.
The presentations by Ksenia Tarasova and Daria Gracheva were prepared within two projects supported by the Russian Science Foundation. The first project (No. 25-18-00751), “Personalization of learning and assessment using artificial intelligence algorithms: model development and risk evaluation” is focused on the use of AI for personalised learning and assessment, including adaptive assessment, automated feedback and the analysis of validity and bias risks. The second project (No. 25-28-01485), “Development of a conceptual model and methodology for assessing AI-literacy as a basis for transforming the landscape of education through technological innovations,” aims to develop a conceptual model and assessment methodology for AI literacy, including a prototype test grounded in psychometric principles.
The Centre’s participation in ICAIE 2026 demonstrates its growing role in international research on AI in education, educational measurement and psychometrically grounded assessment. The conference brought together precisely the themes at the core of the Centre’s current work: AI-enabled personalisation, diagnostic feedback, AI literacy, intelligent assessment and the responsible use of large language models in evaluating student learning.
