School in Context: Social Capital and Community Engagement

The program includes research and practical tracks, that combine theory and practice on the question of how the quality of learning is affected by the social environment of the school. Leading experts are going to talk about best practices for assessing the role of context and how to strengthen the school's capacity through interaction with the social environment. On the research track, we will learn to analyze contextual data, assess efficiency, resilience and segregation in general education. We will have overview of world's flagship projects, such as the "school passports" of countries and regions, maps that provide visual information on social and territorial inequalities.

On the practical track, we will a) learn to mesure, analize and use social capital; b) master the tools for development the partnership of schools with local communities and families, explore the possibilities of networking with additional education centers, colleges and universities; с) look at different issues on educational projects implementation. By looking into the most relevant projects, we will learn how schools can form social capital, find resources and become centers of sociocultural development of the territories even in an adverse contexts. Among the cases are VNEN project and SIB project in Khangalas Ulus in Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).

Practical workshops will alternate with keynote lectures and round tables. At workshops, participants will be able to gain practical knowledge on how to conduct research and implement educational projects.

Requirements:

Basic data skills, willingness to work with English-language texts, research or work experience in education system.

  • Heads of organizations and education authorities at the municipal and regional levels
  • Specialists of regional centers for quality assessment (monitoring) of education
  • Researchers of school and social context
  • Employees of non-profit organizations focused on the development of education and the local community.

Research questions:

  • The relationship between educational outcomes and context, how to take it into account in educational policy
  • What is social capital: how to measure and how to work with
  • School social partnership in different contexts.
