INTERNATIONAL SUMMER SCHOOL ON HIGHER EDUCATION RESEARCH

The theme of the Summer School 2015 at Peking University  

“HIGHER EDUCATION FINANCE AND THE STATE”


This Summer School is one of the two organized by the Institute of Education at Higher School of Economics and China Institute for Education Finance Research, Peking University, one in Russia and one in China. For the 2015 Summer School in China, applicants with backgrounds in all relevant fields (sociology, economics, political science, education, public administration, management, psychology, etc.) are encouraged to apply. The Summer School will take place on July 5-11, 2015 in Beijing.

The objective of the International Summer School is to provide unique learning opportunities by bringing together young and senior researchers from different fields and countries. This exchange of perspectives will advance our understanding of higher education finance and foster the integration of young researchers into an international professional community.

The Summer School 2015 will focus on the relationship of higher education finance and the State. The main purpose of the summer school is to provide an overview of current understanding of government behavior from multiple perspectives, including political economy, economic sociology, legal study, public finance and higher education. Based on such understanding, leading scholars from their fields will discuss the relationship between central (federal) and local (provincial) government, the public good provision by central and local government, and funding for higher education under such framework.

Faculty and participants will discuss issues such as:

o   Analysis of government as bureaucratic organization

o   Relation between central and local governments in higher education

o   Historical changes in government role in higher education finance

o   Empirical analysis of higher education finance  


Potential faculty of the Summer School includes distinguished international researchers and experts in education finance with different professional backgrounds: Isak Froumin (Institute of Education, HSE), ZHOU Xueguang (Stanford University), WANG Rong (CIEFR, Peking University), LIU Mingxing (CIEFR, Peking University), GUO Jianru (GSE, Peking University), YANG Po (GSE, Peking University), and  Prof. Jandhyala Bala Gangadhar Tilak, Professor and Head, Department of Educational Finance, National University of Educational Planning and Administration, India.

The format of the Summer School includes seminars, discussions of participants’ research projects, master-classes on research methodology and writing articles for academic journals. The Summer School will end with a one-day conference on education finance from comparative perspective.  The working language of the summer school is English. Participants must have a strong command of spoken and written English.

 

The tuition fee of 250 EUR is covered by the organizers.The travel and participation is paid by the participants. Fifteen scholarships will be provided to cover participation for applicants selected on a competitive basis.

 

The deadline for applications is June 1, 2015. To apply you will need to submit online.

  1. An application form.
  2. A 500-1000 word summary in English of your current research project dealing with theory of the State or higher education finance (you will be expected to present this at the Summer School), including the objectives of the study, its theoretical/conceptual framework, methodology/design, and significance.
  3. Recent curriculum vitae detailing your education and work experience, publications, other professional activities.

 

The selection of Summer School participants will be made no later than June 15th, 2015.
