Education is both an institutional sphere and a wide scope of practices involving virtually all modern individuals. It plays a crucial role in shaping people’s lives and identities and predictably enjoys an enormous attention within the social sciences. Educational experience is in turn governed by decisions and choices people make navigating through the system and life course, their desires and expectations, ideals and visions of the future. Despite of how deeply cultural these issues are, the mainstream of the sociology of education continues to be culturally insensitive. This conference aims to challenge this dominant vision and to focus on the ways one could apply cultural sociological resources to the analysis of educational issues. Its main focus is educational and career choice, decision-making in building life trajectories, and the various ways to investigate these issues by addressing foundational role of culture.

This conference follows up on the conference organized by Professor Mats Trondman and his colleagues in Linnaeus University in Växjö, in December 2014. The growing community of scholars and research teams involved in this endeavor shares non-reductionist vision of culture and represents a variety of strongly culturally-sensitive perspectives.

Researcher from Yale University (USA), Northwestern University (USA), Linnaeus University (Sweden), University of Sciences and Technologies Lille-1 (France), University of Texas at Austin (USA) and Higher School of Economics (Moscow) will present their findings.

Keynote speaker: Professor Amy Binder, University of California in San-Diego (USA). Deputy editor of the “Sociology of education” journal, she was a 2014/2015 Chair of the Sociology of Education section of the American Sociological Association. Her current research is focused on the investigation of elite universities student’s formation of aspirations to work in prestigious jobs.
During the conference Professor Binder will give a keynote speach "What Is Missing when We Overlook Culture in the Sociology of Education?" (December 1, 10:00, Potapovskyi pereulok, 16-10, Room 309).

Specially for HSE News service, Anna Chernyakhovskaya spoke with some of our speakers, including key note speaker Professor Amy Binder (University California San Diego). Here's what came out.
