International PhD seminar in Education | Education, Gender Inequalities and Labour Market
Meghna Khurania
Jawaharlal Nehru University, India
Meghna Khurania (Jawaharlal Nehru University, India) presented her research titled "Gender Inequality in Vocational Education and Labour Market: A Study in Uttar Pradesh". Her presentation explored the relationship between gender, vocational education, and labor market outcomes within the context of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Special attention was given to the socio-economic factors affecting the choice of vocational education, as well as the challenges women face when accessing technical and vocational education (TVET). Meghna emphasized the importance of TVET in bridging the gender gap and increasing women's participation in the labor market, particularly through the work of Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs).

HSE University, Russia
Margarita Kiryushina (HSE University, Russia) delivered a talk on "The Impact of Gender Segregation by University Major on the Early-Career Gender Wage Gap Among University Graduates". This dissertation focused on examining the role of higher education in shaping gender wage disparities among Russian university graduates during the early stages of their careers, specifically highlighting how gender segregation across fields of study contributes to wage differences. Margarita noted that the gender wage gap emerges immediately post-graduation and is largely influenced by horizontal segregation across disciplines, where women often choose less lucrative fields like education and humanities, while men dominate higher-paying STEM fields.
Both researchers received valuable feedback from Olga Savinskaya, Leading Research Fellow at the International Laboratory for Social Integration Research at HSE University, and Anna Lykyanova, Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Labour Market Studies at HSE University.
The organizers would like to express their gratitude to all speakers and participants for their contributions, making the seminar a fruitful and engaging event. We look forward to seeing you again at our future meetings!
