Professor Fernand de Varennes Spoke at the Annual Meeting of the Russian Association of International Law
On the 30th of January Professor Fernand de Varennes, UN Special Rapporteur on minority issues, gave a lecture on the topic “Protection of minorities in the international law: its importance during global instability”.
He pointed out the importance of protecting minorities, especially in the current political situation when some political groups appeal to the threat allegedly posed to titular nations by minorities. Professor de Varennes presented historical and legal aspects of minority protection in international law and also briefly touched upon his activities in the UN.
Among the audience there were members of the Association, practicing lawyers and students interested in international law. The lecture was followed by a lively discussion of the issues raised in Prof. de Varennes’s report and his work as the UN special Rapporteur on minority issues.
