International Summer School on Social Network Analysis was held in St. Petersburg Department of HSE
Summer School "Social networks in education, science and technology» (International Social Network Analysis Summer School) is part of a long-term project of Laboratory of Sociology of Education and Science of the HSE St. Petersburg Department and aims to train employees on software processing of network data. This School is a training course to collect and analyze data of the structure and dynamics of communities for bibliographic mapping, research methods of cooperation in science and modern technologies.
This timeSchool gathered an international group of researchers from different scientific disciplines. Participants and teachers of the school were social scientists, computer scientists, political scientists, historians and economists from the United States, the Netherlands, Iran, Russia, Ukraine, Germany, India, China, Chile, Pakistan, Sweden and Belgium. During the Summer School teachers presented an overview of theoretical approaches, and also a review and comparison of existing software products used to analyze large social networks, in particular for working with bibliographic data.
Summer School has included lectures, seminars (practical tasks with such programs as VOSviewer, CitNetExplorer, NodeXL, packages for the analysis of network programming language R), project presentations followed by discussion with participants in the training group.
The School was attended by members of the International Laboratory of the Analysis of Educational policy- Elizaveta Chernenko and Andrei Zakharov. Elizaveta has presented the project of Laboratory - the Analysis of the influence of students' friends in the classroom and their position in the relevant social class network on students' performances and the choice of their educational trajectory (analysis on the data of a longitudinal study on the basis of samples TIMSS-PISA). The presentation's received valuable suggestions for the further conduction of the project. Elizaveta said that tutorial school was very rich and informative, filled with bright performances of prospective studies. Participation in it has given new knowledge and new impetus to the work.
