Eighth Congress of European Research in Mathematics Education (CERME 8) February, 6-10 in Antalya (Turkey)

The Eighth Congress of European Research in Mathematics Education(http://cerme8.metu.edu.tr/about_cerme.html) was conducted February, 6-10 in Antalya (Turkey), which was organized by the European Society for Research in Mathematics Education (ERME: http://www.erme.tu-dortmund.de/).
 
The participants of the event were researchers and professors in the field of Mahematics Education from more than 50 European countries, as well as from the USA, Canada, Mexico and South America. Elena Kardanova, represented Higher School of Economics on the Congress.

 
The objectives of the Congress could be identified as three “Cs”: Communication, Collaboration, Cooperation.

A row of plenary sessions were carried out including numerous lectures and meetings, as well as there were 17 working groups sessions on the following topics: “Comparative Studies in Mathematics Education”, “Cultural Diversity and Mathematics Education”, “Mathematics and Language”, “Algebraic Thinking”, “Argumentation and Proof”, “Mathematical Potential, Creativity and Talent”, “Technologies and Resources in Mathematics Education”, “From a Study of Teaching Practices to Issues in Teacher Education”, etc.

A special day devoted to the needs of young researchers who work on the dissertations in the area of Mathemaics education was assigned before the beginning of the Congress (http://cerme8.metu.edu.tr/templates/YERMEFinalProgram.pdf). It is highly important that the young scientists will find support and supervision in building up their own research.

Such actual questions connected with Mathematics education as: improving the quality of Mathematics education; extra help to young researchers (summer schools, grants); making up of the ratings dealing with scientific journals of Mathematics education; possible future joint projects of Russia and European countries were discussed in the course of the event.

 Joining of Russia to Nordic-Baltic comparative research in mathematics education (NorBA – a comparative research of Mathematics Education in the Northern Baltic countries (Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Finland, Sweden and Norway) http://norbal.wordpress.com/2011/09/29/hello-world/) was also on the agenda.

A chairman of the Congress Ferdinando Arzarello asked E. Kardanova to assist in spreading the information on ERME and the Congress among Russian researchers, especially, the young ones. He also suggested collaboration, joint publications and research work.

Negotiations with Alexander Karp, a professor of Mathematics and Education from Columbian University (New York, USA, http://www.tc.columbia.edu/academics/index.htm?facid=apk16), took place. In addition, prof. Karp is an author and editor of the book called  «Russian Mathematics Education. History and World Significance». Cooperation in the field of writing the White Book of Russian Mathematics Education was the main topic of discussion.



An exciting tour to an ancient city of Side was arranged during the last day of the event.

The next Congressed is planned to be held in Prague, in February 2015.
