February, 04-08 2013 three lectures on Economy of Education were held by the academic supervisor of the International Laboratory for Educational Policy Research HSE Graduate School of Education professor Martin Carnoy (http://www.hse.ru/org/persons/27538693).

 Professor of Stanford University Martin Carnoy is famous all over the world for his deep research in the field of economy of education, international comparative research. Furthermore, he is the author of numerous books, articles and publications in the related topics. The lectures were mainly devoted to the following topic: “The Production of Education: How Do Schools Produce Student Outcomes?” 

By the end of these three lectures, the listeners were able to discuss intelligently: (1) Whether schools can make a significant difference in student outcomes; (2) Whether school choice can improve the quality of schooling and improve student outcomes; (3) How to tell whether charter schools are more effective than public schools; (4) What it is about teachers, if anything, than helps students learn more and how to show this empirically; (5) Possible reasons why schools in some countries are better than schools in other countries and the kinds of studies that can show why they are better.

More than 15 students and HSE staff participated in the classes.
Each lecture was provided by a Power Point presentation, additional reading and home assignments.
