How collaboration influences the effect of note-taking on writing performance and recall of contents

Recently, universities have been actively promoting the idea of joint, group notes, suggesting that joint training and writing notes can have a synergistic effect. But the benefits of this technique are not obvious. In a recent study, Evgenia Shmeleva and Jamie Costley with co-author compared the educational outcomes of students who took individual and collaborative notes. The study showed that students who took joint notes do better on memorization tasks, but worse on writing an academic text (the final task at the end of the course).
