Centre for Sociology of Higher Education received a grant from the Russian Scientific Fund

There is a widespread wrong belief that young girls are worse at studying engineering and other technical specialties. The studies have shown that there are no significant differences in abilities between female and male students in STEM, but females are less likely to choose STEM fields for their career and they experience bigger difficulties during their studies. This deeply rooted stereotype is influencing young women’s choice of specialty in most of the countries and Russia is no different.
Center for Sociology of Higher Education has just received a grant for a year-long research project “The role of gender stereotypes on career aspirations and study experience of girls in engineering majors in Russian universities”.

This project is going to investigate how gender stereotypes affect young females’ choice of major in engineering and technology in Russia.

The goals of the project:
1. Describe how female students choose engineering and technology programs, identify how gender stereotypes influence their choice.
2. Estimate the prevalence of gender stereotypes among teachers and students.
3. Find out how young female and male students feel about gender stereotypes.
4. Analyze how gender stereotypes affect the experience of female students in engineering and technology fields: their involvement in academic process, etc.
