Higher Education System Dynamics and Institutional Diversity in Post-Soviet Countries

This international interdisciplinary project is conducted by the Institute of Education at the National research university Higher School of Economics (Moscow) in partnership with the World Bank. The project involves researchers working on the analysis of higher education system changes in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan.

The purpose of the study is to investigate the institutional landscape in higher education systems within post-Soviet states as a consequence of various factors and influences. The main aims of the study are; to track the major transformations in higher education and the contextual transformations of each system of higher education, to grasp the uniqueness of the Soviet legacy in each of the former Soviet republics and, ultimately, come to an understanding of the core issues which cause higher education structural change within the countries of the study. 


New issue of HERB "Higher Education Landscape in Post-Soviet Countries: 25 Years of Changes"

The new of issue of the Higher Education in Russia and Beyond "Higher Education Landscape in Post-Soviet Countries: 25 Years of Changes" is released. The new issue covers the transformations of higher education in the former Soviet republics. This issue’s particular focus is the changes of the institutional landscape in the postSoviet countries with regard to national trends of higher education expansion. The papers of the issue include key empirical findings of the project.

The 'Culture of Civility' (odob) and Its Influence on the Educational System in Uzbekistan

The first session of a workshop dedicated to the topic of “Soviet and Post-soviet education: the research perspectives” took place at the Institute of Education on Wednesday. It was marked by a research presentation “The culture of civility (odob) and its influence on the educational system in Uzbekistan” by anthropologist Jesko Schmoller, PhD.
