In mid-July, Irina Shcheglova, Doctoral student at IOE and Analyst at CSHE, participated in the international summer school on network analysis, held by the Centre for German and European Studies in St. Petersburg, Russia. The 2017 school primarily sought to give a comprehensive and accessible idea about core theoretical concepts underlying network analysis and frontline techniques for handling data and network modelling. Featuring a superb faculty of the world’s leading experts in qualitative and quantitative social research, communications and media, the event has seen broad participation by BA, MA and PhD students from Russia and abroad.

The article "The mismatch between student educational expectations and realities: prevalence, causes, and consequences" written by Natalia Maloshonok and Evgeniy Terentev has been published in the European Journal of Higher Education.
On May 26, 2017 there was an official opening of the monument to the ‘anonymous peer reviewer’. The concrete block in the courtyard of the HSE Institute of Education has been a lasting image of the WW2 era. However, last summer, the institute’s staff came up with the idea of turning it into a piece of art. The idea was put forth by Igor Chirikov, Director of the Centre of Sociology of Higher Education, whereby this useless piece of concrete would be transformed into a monument to the ‘anonymous peer reviewer’. Moreover, this idea ended up garnering the most support as a result of an internal vote.

The Center of Sociology of Higher Education and the Center for Institutional Research have launched the survey "Student Experience in the Research University" SERU-I. The Survey is open from April 3 to April 30, 2017. Every 10th participant who completes the survey “Student Experience in the Research University” will receive a gift card for a cup of Jeffrey’s coffee. Also, all active and creative students can take part in the slogan contest. The grand prize – camera GoPro and nice participants will receive an audience choice award – HSE hoodies .
Unlike most other inferior, data-based assessment systems, its hi-tech algorithms work with a completely randomized sample basis. The results aren’t prejudiced by factors such as exam results, quality of teaching, or caliber of research. Instead, Fortunate 500 is totally random. As a result, its No. 1 university may not be the most academically rigorous; it might not be the most highly respected institution; it might not be an actual university at all. It will, though, be the luckiest university to have been picked randomly out of a sample of 2,000 institutions.
