Fall gradSERU Workshop
On November 15 University of Minnesota and CSHE ran the SERU Graduate Student Experience Workshop at UC Berkeley. Participants discussed practical learning and insights from the gradSERU Survey. Current and prospective members of the Consortium had an opportunity to network with leaders in graduate education research and administration from around the world, get more information on the gradSERU instrument and discuss questions regarding SERU membership.

A working paper co-authored by CSHE Analyst Irina Shcheglova has been published in the online repository of UC Berkeley’s Center for Studies in Higher Education. The paper analyzes how US universities’ expanding international agendas relate to student global competence.

International Summer Schools: A Fascinating Journey of Learning and Discovery

In mid-July, Irina Shcheglova, Doctoral student at IOE and Analyst at CSHE, participated in the international summer school on network analysis, held by the Centre for German and European Studies in St. Petersburg, Russia. The 2017 school primarily sought to give a comprehensive and accessible idea about core theoretical concepts underlying network analysis and frontline techniques for handling data and network modelling. Featuring a superb faculty of the world’s leading experts in qualitative and quantitative social research, communications and media, the event has seen broad participation by BA, MA and PhD students from Russia and abroad.

New publication in the European Journal of Higher Education

The article "The mismatch between student educational expectations and realities: prevalence, causes, and consequences" written by Natalia Maloshonok and Evgeniy Terentev has been published in the European Journal of Higher Education.

SERU Research Symposium: Politics and Policy – A New Era for UG and Graduate Education

The SERU Research Symposium devoted to opportunities and challenges of higher education in the world was held from 15-17 June 2017 at the Rutgers University, USA. The representatives of the Center of Sociology of Higher Education Igor Chirikov, Saule Bekova, Irina Shcheglova took part in the Symposium.

On 9 June 2017 there was an official awarding ceremony of students who participated in the international project "Student Experience in Research University". 180 students submitted their ideas of slogans for the next SERU-I wave. Expert committee selected 1 slogan - the winner of a GoPro camera and 8 authors of creative slogans received HSE hoodies.

First Ever Monument to Anonymous Peer Reviewer Unveiled at HSE
On May 26, 2017 there was an official opening of the monument to the ‘anonymous peer reviewer’. The concrete block in the courtyard of the HSE Institute of Education has been a lasting image of the WW2 era. However, last summer, the institute’s staff came up with the idea of turning it into a piece of art. The idea was put forth by Igor Chirikov, Director of the Centre of Sociology of Higher Education, whereby this useless piece of concrete would be transformed into a monument to the ‘anonymous peer reviewer’. Moreover, this idea ended up garnering the most support as a result of an internal vote.
