Semyonov Award is designed as an internship at the HSE Laboratory for University Development and support to early-career scholars for participation in joint research.

What is Semyonov Award?

The Award is named after Dmitry Semyonov, founder of the HSE Laboratory for University Development, who died tragically in 2017. Under his leadership, the laboratory became one of the key project and analysis departments of the HSE Institute of Education, and actively promoted collaboration between Russian and international researchers of the new generation.

The same goal – supporting young researchers, promoting academic exchange, and joint research – is pursued by the Semyonov Award organizers.

Award winners get a 3 — 8-week internship at the HSE Laboratory for University Development working on their research. The awards cover their expenses related to travel and accommodation in Moscow.

What does the laboratory offer?

It offers not only an equipped personal workspace, but also a creative environment.

The laboratory provides the award winners with an opportunity to access quantitative data on Russian higher education. In addition, they will be able to carry out interviews and collect the other necessary information on their project and also take part in workshops, discussions, extramural seminars, summer schools, and many other events.

Who can compete for the award?

MA and PhD students, as well as early-career researchers with up to 5 years' experience after PhD completion.

It is planned to award the grants twice a year. Two applicants will be selected for the first internship, which will take place during the period between June and December 2019.

How to apply?

Submissions for the first competition are accepted through March 31. The applications should be made in English and include an extended research proposal, a CV and a motivation letter. Priority is given to applications with topics related to the ongoing Lab's research projects. The results will be announced in April, 2019.

Selection will be done by the Competition Committee upon approval by the Semyonov Award International Council, which includes world’s leading higher education researchers and HSE representatives.
