On June 17–18, Deans of Schools of Education from leading research universities gathered in the town of Pushkin, near St. Petersburg, Russia. The Summit entitled “Schools of Education at Research Universities: Challenges, Opportunities, Collaboration” was organized by the Institute of Education, Higher School of Economics, and the Graduate School of Education, Peking University.

Member of the Research of Modern Childhood group, Anastasia Nisskaya, Ph.D., took part in the meeting of OECD Early Childhood Education and Care Network at the beginning of June. She later shared her impressions and thoughts on what is common for Russian and European preschool education.

Higher Education in Russia and Beyond (HERB) team presents the 8th issue of a journal destined to bring current Russian, Central Asian and Eastern European educational trends to the attention of the international research community. This issue covers the transformation of higher education in former Soviet republics.

from 18 countries were submitted for the third Innovation in Education Contest. The number of people wishing to take part in the competition increases year-on-year: in 2014 – 577 applications were received, and in 2015 – 678.

The 4th Conference of Higher Education Research Association took place at the  University of Hong Kong at the end of May. Igor Chirikov, Leading Research Fellow at the Institute of Eduaction and Managing Director of the Student Experience in the Research University International Consortium (SERU-I), participated in it with a report, dubbed “The Impact of the Project to Boost Global Competition (5-100) on Structural Transformations in Russian Universities".

The more books in the family and the richer and more educated the parents, the more likely it is that the children will do well at school.

May 12 is the deadline for this year’s Innovations in Education Competition (KIvO-2016), which has now taken place for three years in a row. The winner of the competition will receive a travel grant to study or try out a project anywhere in the world. The first year’s winner, Diana Kolesnikova, has returned from the U.S., where she studied how educational spaces and various other educational projects for children are set up.

The first session of a workshop dedicated to the topic of “Soviet and Post-soviet education: the research perspectives” took place at the Institute of Education on Wednesday. It was marked by a research presentation “The culture of civility (odob) and its influence on the educational system in Uzbekistan” by anthropologist Jesko Schmoller, PhD.

The Center for Cultural Sociology and Anthropology of Education has been in collaboration with the eduLIFE project, conducted by the European University Institute, for a few years, and several articles and books can be noted by HSE research fellows being their co-authors.

The 40th annual conference of the Association for the Study of Higher Education (ASHE) took place on November 5-8 in Denver (Colorado, US).
