In August, the Director of the Institute of Education, Prof Evgeniy Terentev, and the Head of International Affairs, Maksim Nikitin, visited top-ranking Hong Kong universities to network. They also attended the AIEdu2025 conference to exchange knowledge about the influence of artificial intelligence on education.

This July in Shanghai, more than 50 researchers from nine countries—from Russia and China to Canada and Singapore—gathered for the International Summer Institute on Artificial Intelligence in Education. For several days, the city became a global hub of discussion on how universities are responding to the rapid rise of AI.

A group of students, faculty, and alumni from the HSE Institute of Education’s Master’s program in Education Administration recently took part in a short-term study trip to China, where they explored the local education system. Their itinerary included visits to Tsinghua University in Beijing, East China Normal University in Shanghai, six schools, and a kindergarten.

In the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence, understanding the capabilities and limitations of large language models (LLMs) in specialized fields such as education is crucial. A study by Elena Kardanova, Alina Ivanova, Ksenia Tarasova, Taras Pashchenko, Aleksei Tikhoniuk, Elen Yusupova, Anatoly Kasprzhak, Yaroslav Kuzminov, Ekaterina Kruchinskaia, and Irina Brun, introduces a novel psychometrics-based methodology to assess LLM performance in the field of pedagogy. By focusing on the educational domain and developing a robust benchmark tailored for LLM evaluation, the authors offer new insights into the strengths and weaknesses of these models.

From 23 to 28 June 2024, the delegation of HSE University made a number of visits to leading universities in China. During the visit, representatives of the Institute of Education — Maxim Nikitin and Svetlana Zhuchkova — shared current results and ideas of the strategic project "Success and Self-Sustainability of the Individual in a Changing World" and exchanged proposals for cooperation in future research and projects.

At the BRICS Civil Society Forum, leaders of non-profit organizations and experts discussed the future of education in their countries. Experts from the Institute of Education actively participated in the forum. The meeting led to a number of suggestions for deepening cooperation in this field.

We are happy to announce an English release of IOE’s 'White Books' analytical series, a research endeavor as comprehensive and in-depth as no other study on the Russian educational system carried out so far.

The HSE University Institute of Education (IOE) will launch new courses as part of its master’s programmes in the 2022/23 academic year. They are designed to provide competencies to those either currently working or planning to work in education. The plans have already gained financial support: the Vladimir Potanin Foundation ran a grant competition in which two HSE University Institute of Education entries won grants and another made the reserve list.

HSE University has placed 66th in the Times Higher Education Young University Rankings 2022, which assess universities younger than 50 years old. The THE Young University Ranking is the first in a series of global rankings to be published in 2022.

HSE University has entered the top 100 universities in the Times Higher Education Rankings for Law and Social Sciences. For the first time, the university is also among the top 150 in the Education ranking and the top 200 in Business & Economics.
