On 29 September, the courtyard of the HSE Institute of Education welcomed a new mural—a vibrant artwork that embodies the institute’s core ideals and values. The piece was created by Daria Tyutikova, the winner of the open competition “Education Through Time”.

In their recent study, Alexey Koshel, Yaroslav Kuzminov, Ekaterina Kruchinskaia, and Bogdan Lesiv of HSE University unravel the complex challenge of regulating digital platforms across jurisdictions. Their paper, In Search of the Regulatory Optimum for Digital Platforms: A Comparative Analysis, sets out not only to dissect the legislative frameworks of key global economies but also to propose a more coherent legal language for Russia’s rapidly evolving platform economy.

In the ever-evolving world of education, where Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) have become a beacon of accessibility and innovation, a team of researchers—Muhammed Shittu, Anna Gorbunova, Christopher Lange, and Jamie Costley—embarked on a quest to decode a peculiar phenomenon: Why do students re-watch video lectures? Their study, published in the Electronic Journal of e-Learning, dives deep into the intricate dynamics of video lecture design and its impact on student engagement. With insights drawn from over 1,500 surveys conducted at South Korea’s Open Cyber University (OCU), the researchers uncover the hidden forces that compel learners to hit the replay button.

Narratives We Live By: Sequentiality and Timeliness in Temporal Structuring of Action, a recent study by sociologist and cultural theorist Dmitry Kurakin, delves into the intricate ways narratives shape human behavior over time. Published in Theory and Society, the paper bridges theoretical innovation with empirical analysis, offering a fresh perspective on how individuals navigate the interplay between personal timelines and societal expectations.

The International Education Observatory initiative, launched by HSE University to focus on expert evaluation, analytics, and joint scientific research, has successfully completed the formation of a research network across all BRICS nations. South Africa was the final link, with the University of Pretoria and the University of the Witwatersrand joining experts from Russia, China, India, and Brazil. 

From 23 to 28 June 2024, the delegation of HSE University made a number of visits to leading universities in China. During the visit, representatives of the Institute of Education — Maxim Nikitin and Svetlana Zhuchkova — shared current results and ideas of the strategic project "Success and Self-Sustainability of the Individual in a Changing World" and exchanged proposals for cooperation in future research and projects.

In March 2024, researches of the Institute of Education visited leading universities in Beijing, China, to strengthen established ties and deepen research cooperation. As part of their visit, scholars shared their research results and gave guest lectures.

For the tenth year in a row, the Competition of Innovations in Education (KIVO) is accepting innovative project submissions—educational training resources, apps, platforms, events and media, methodological and technological developments and much more. The top 30 projects will be presented at the ‘startup alley’ of the Catalyst for Innovation in Education conference in Moscow. The creators of the best project will be able to conduct joint research with scientists from the HSE University Institute of Education. There will be two waves of applications; the first closes on October 15 (and offers certain bonuses to project creators), while the second closes on October 31.

‘Entrepreneurialism and Society: Consequences and Meanings,’ a new volume in organizational sociology & economics by Emerald Publishing Limited, features a contribution by IOE experts Pavel Sorokin, Isak Froumin, and Svetlana Chernenko that explores the realm of entrepreneurship-centric learning & development in post-Soviet higher education.

Out at Palgrave Macmillan is a new volume titled, ‘Building Research Capacity at Universities: Insights from Post-Soviet Countries.’ The chapter featuring the Russian case––‘Russia: The Rise of Research Universities’––has been prepared by Igor Fedyukin, Aleksandr Kliagin, and Isak Froumin of the HSE University Russia.
