On July 26, a cohort of global experts who are into various strands of educational and socio-economic R&D will come together online for an open session as part of the World Bank – HSE University joint series of monthly seminars on education amid and post COVID-19. This time, the session will focus on how families have been able to steer through the challenges and struggles of doing education remotely.
On June 25, a cohort of experts in various strands of higher education scholarship will meet online for this year’s Session 4 by the Observatory for Higher Education Transformations, an initiative to advance HE research and networking that spans IOE alongside a number of other leading academic hubs from across the globe. This time, the open expert discussion will focus on how HE systems with centralized and decentralized governance have been navigating an environment of uncertainty and change amid the COVID-19 emergency.
On April 19, this year’s third session of the Observatory for Higher Education Transformations will host an open expert discussion titled, ‘Experiences of University Students during the Pandemic.’
On March 3, a premier group of scholars representing world-renowned powerhouses in social and educational R&D will meet online for this year’s debut session by the Observatory for Higher Education Transformations titled, ‘The Changing Landscape of Higher Education: New Practices and System-Wide Trends.’
In December 2020, IOE expert Ulyana Zakharova took part in the eSTARS international conference of e-learning stakeholders, a joint initiative between HSE and Coursera, where she presented at a special session on sociology of higher education. In an interview with the HSE News Desk, Ulyana shared about how students’ prowess in key components of personal agency, such as self-efficacy, initiative, and self-direction, are related to their ability to adapt to and perform in distance education.

World Bank—HSE University Webinar Examines the Costs of School Closures During the Covid-19 Pandemic
On May 21, the joint webinar series, ‘Education under COVID-19: Problems, Solutions, Perspectives, Research’ began with a session about the effects of school closures under the pandemic. Harry Anthony Patrinos of the World Bank presented the results of a model that he and a team of researchers developed in order to predict the extent to which the closures may reduce learning and lead to future losses in labor productivity and earnings for today’s students. The webinar was moderated by Isak Froumin (Head of the HSE Institute of Education), while Professors Tommaso Agasisti (School of Management, Politecnico di Milano) and Sergey Kosaretsky (Director, HSE Centre of General and Extracurricular Education) served as discussants.
