On 23–28 November, the 17th Asian Conference on Education (ACE2025) was held in Tokyo. It brought together colleagues from the International Laboratory of Research and Design in eLearning of the Institute of Education.

In October, the HSE Institute of Education fellows presented a wide range of research initiatives at the annual World Education Research Association (WERA) conference in João Pessoa, Brazil.

October at the HSE Institute of Education concluded with the XVI International Conference on Higher Education (ICHE), dedicated to the theme ‘Higher Education: Between Private and Public Good.’ This year’s event brought together over 700 participants from 32 regions of Russia and eight countries, who engaged in a vibrant discussion on the evolving role of higher education in society.

Three decades ago, China set out to build universities that could rival the world’s best—and it succeeded. Now, one of its leading scholars says the same model that powered that rise is holding it back. At ICHE Conference 2025, Professor Rui Yang called for a rethink of how knowledge—not just output—should drive the future.

This July in Shanghai, more than 50 researchers from nine countries—from Russia and China to Canada and Singapore—gathered for the International Summer Institute on Artificial Intelligence in Education. For several days, the city became a global hub of discussion on how universities are responding to the rapid rise of AI.

At the BRICS Civil Society Forum, leaders of non-profit organizations and experts discussed the future of education in their countries. Experts from the Institute of Education actively participated in the forum. The meeting led to a number of suggestions for deepening cooperation in this field.

On July 26, a cohort of global experts who are into various strands of educational and socio-economic R&D will come together online for an open session as part of the World Bank – HSE University joint series of monthly seminars on education amid and post COVID-19. This time, the session will focus on how families have been able to steer through the challenges and struggles of doing education remotely.
