The plenary session of the XVII International Academic Conference ‘From the Broad Educational Opportunities Towards Social Mobility Through Education’, held on April 20, 2016, was dedicated to the ways of overcoming inequality in education.

Two researchers of the Institute of Education have taken part in the AERA Annual Meeting that was held in Washington, DC on April, 7–12. Alina Ivanova, IoE postgraduate student, shares her view on five reasons to attend one of the largest conferences in the field of education research.

The article ‘Developing instruments to assess and compare the quality of engineering education: the case of China and Russia’ by the group of IOE staff members (Elena Kardanova, Prashant Loyalka,  Igor Chirikov, Ekaterina ENchikova) was published on the online platform of the journal ‘Assessment & Evaluation in Higher Education’ issued by Taylor & Francis.

The beauty of the modern pool of ideas in the field of education lies in its multiple approaches, as well as diverse and occasionally conflicting opinions. As the leading Russian journal on education, Voprosy obrazovaniya/Educational Studies offers a space for the professional community worldwide to engage in rich discussion.

Families' limited cultural capital can hinder social mobility for their school-age childern and 'doom' them to a particular educational path. Academic performance being comparable, the chances of continuing studies in high school (grades 10 and 11) after nine years of secondary school are unequal for teenagers from families of different socioeconomic status. While children of well-educated and affluent parents usually go on to high school and then to college, their peers from working-class families often switch to vocational school despite good academic performance, thus maintaining socioeconomic inequality.

The first article of the current issue of HERB journal, published by the HSE in March, is "Authentic Improvement: A Case for Flexible Faculty Evaluation Policies” by Alexander M. Sidorkin, Dean of Institute of Education.

Dr. Werner Binder of Masaryk University, Czech Republic, a specialist in cultural sociology, has been in collaboration with the HSE Institute of Education for a couple of years. During his visit to Moscow two years ago, Dr. Binder gave public lectures and headed a workshop at the IoE. In the interview, he dwells on the participation in the IoE project “Trajectories in Education and Career”, as well as his cooperation with Dmitry Kurakin, Director of the Center for Cultural Sociology and Anthropology of Education.

Manager and postgraduate student of the Institute of Education took part in a workshop, organized by the Center for Evaluation & Monitoring of the University of Durham last December, to study foreign experience in assessment of elementary education quality.

The Center for Cultural Sociology and Anthropology of Education has been in collaboration with the eduLIFE project, conducted by the European University Institute, for a few years, and several articles and books can be noted by HSE research fellows being their co-authors.
